Same name, different recipe: why the size of your Korean ramen matters

K-Food Label · Updated Oct 31, 2026

Most people assume a Shin Ramyun is a Shin Ramyun. The official label data says otherwise: the cup and the big bowl are made to different recipes, and only one of them lists pork.

Shin Ramyun: cup vs big bowl

Both are sold side by side in Korean convenience stores, and the packaging looks almost the same. But the big bowl lists pork as an allergen and the cup does not. Their soup packets differ by more than a dozen ingredients: the big bowl has a boiled-meat seasoning and beef bone extract, while the cup uses seasoned beef powder and beef soup powder instead.

Saeutang shrimp ramen: the same story

The spicy shrimp ramen follows the same pattern. The big bowl lists pork and the small cup does not. Both contain beef and chicken, so neither suits a halal diet, but for someone avoiding pork the size changes the answer.

Yukgaejang: same dish, different brands

Yukgaejang is a spicy beef soup, so you might not expect pork at all. Nongshim’s yukgaejang bowl lists pork. Ottogi’s yukgaejang cup does not, and its label has no shared-facility warning for pork either.

Tempura udon: a seafood difference

The differences are not only about meat. Nongshim Tempura Udon Cup lists shrimp; the big bowl does not. Both list squid. If you have a shrimp allergy, check the exact size you are buying.

Why does this happen?

Cup, bowl and big bowl versions are registered as separate products with their own recipes, often made at different times or on different production lines. Recipes are also updated over time. The brand name on the front tells you very little about what is inside.

How to check in a store

Match the barcode, not just the name. Every product page on this site shows the barcode and the Korean product name you can show to staff. If you cannot read the label, search the barcode here.

Numbers are computed from the Food QR label data published by Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety and update every week. Products without allergen data (460) are excluded.
